How Painful Is Liposuction Recovery?
Medically reviewed by Dr. Paulo Michels, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon· Updated 30 August 2026

The honest answer: liposuction recovery is usually described as discomfort rather than real pain — a deep soreness much like the ache after an intense workout. It is strongest in the first few days, is managed with simple medication, and then fades steadily; most patients are up and walking the same day and back at a desk within about a week. Dr. Paulo Michels, a Brazilian board-certified plastic surgeon who received the ISAPS Gold Medal for Best Body Contouring at the World Plastic Surgery Olympiads 2025, explains what recovery actually feels like.
What does liposuction recovery actually feel like?
Patients rarely use the word “pain” when they describe it afterwards. The dominant sensation in the first few days is mild soreness, like an intense workout — the treated areas feel tight, tender and bruised when you move, rather than sharp or stabbing. There is often a little fluid drainage from the tiny port sites at first, which settles quickly. Crucially, you are up and walking on the day of surgery itself; liposuction does not confine you to bed.
Why is modern liposuction less painful than people expect?
Two things at the operation itself set up a more comfortable recovery. The first is the anaesthesia: surgery is performed under general anaesthesia using TIVA (total intravenous anaesthesia), so you are fully asleep and wake without the procedure itself having been felt. The second is the technology: Dr. Paulo Michels uses VASER ultrasound-assisted liposuction, in which ultrasound gently liquefies the fat while sparing nerves and blood vessels. Because the fat is removed precisely and atraumatically, there is less bruising — and less bruising means a smoother, faster, more comfortable recovery.
How long does the soreness last?
The discomfort peaks in the first days and then fades. The milestones from there are consistent:
- Days 1–7: workout-style soreness, eased by simple medication and gentle walking. Most patients return to desk work in about 5–7 days, depending on how physical the job is.
- Weeks 3–4: light activity has been building back gradually, and full training resumes at around 3–4 weeks.
- Weeks 6–8: the compression garment — the most important part of aftercare — is worn throughout this period to control swelling and help the skin retract smoothly.
- Months 3–6: residual swelling resolves and the final shape refines. Temporary numbness or firmness in the treated areas is normal along the way and settles.
What can you do to make recovery more comfortable?
Three habits make the biggest difference. Wear the compression garment exactly as instructed — it controls swelling, supports the treated areas and makes moving noticeably more comfortable. Walk early and often; gentle movement helps the fluid settle and keeps you feeling like yourself. And keep your follow-up visits, so the team can confirm everything is settling as expected and adjust your plan — medication, garment, activity — to how your body is actually healing.
