Mini Tummy Tuck in Dubai: Who It Suits and Who Needs More

Who is a good candidate?

The mini suits a specific, fairly small group: lean patients whose only complaint is a fold or small apron of skin confined below the belly button, with an intact abdominal wall and reasonable skin above the navel. If you can pinch loose skin only below your navel and your profile is otherwise flat, you may be in this group.

Many patients who ask for a mini turn out to need more, because pregnancy usually stretches skin and muscle along the whole abdomen, not only the lower half. A mini in that situation tightens the lower abdomen under an upper abdomen that is still lax.

Who is not a candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

The examination usually points to one of these alternatives:

• Separated muscles above and below the navel. Diastasis recti that runs the length of the abdominal wall has to be repaired along its full length. That is the job of the full abdominoplasty, which also creates a natural-looking belly button.
• A muscle gap but little loose skin. Here MILA, Minimally Invasive Lipoabdominoplasty, repairs the diastasis endoscopically from the pubic bone to the sternum, through the same tiny access points used for liposuction, with no long scar and no skin removal.

• A hard, round belly that cannot be pinched. This is usually visceral fat inside the abdomen. No tummy tuck or liposuction removes it; it is reduced with diet and training.

What if my muscles have separated?

Diastasis recti, the separation of the paired vertical abdominal muscles, is the most common reason the mini is the wrong choice. A mini repairs the muscle wall below the belly button only. When the gap also runs above the navel, the choice is between the full tummy tuck and MILA.

The deciding question is the skin. If there is excess skin to remove, the full tummy tuck removes it and repairs the muscle in the same operation. Should I lose weight before a mini tummy tuck?
