Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Medically reviewed by Dr. Paulo Michels, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon· Updated 22 October 2026

An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes loose, hanging skin and excess fat from the upper arms — often called bingo wings — after weight loss or with age. Depending on how much skin there is, the scar sits in the armpit (mini arm lift) or along the inner arm, sometimes continuing onto the side of the chest. Dr. Paulo Michels performs arm lift surgery and arm liposuction at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi for patients from Dubai and across the UAE.
Loose skin under the upper arms — the “bingo wings” that swing when you wave — is one of the most common concerns after weight loss, and one of the most frustrating, because no amount of training tightens skin. An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes that skin and reshapes the arm. Dr. Paulo Michels performs arm lift surgery, and the less invasive alternatives for milder cases, at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi, for patients from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and across the UAE.
The most important part of the decision happens before surgery: working out whether your arm is carrying fat, loose skin, or both — because the treatments are different, and so are the scars.
What causes loose skin on the upper arms?
The underside of the upper arm has thin skin and little internal support. When it is stretched — by weight gain followed by weight loss, by age, by sun damage or simply by genetics — it loses the elasticity to spring back. Common situations:
- After major weight loss — from diet, bariatric surgery or GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro. See loose skin after weight loss for how the different areas of the body are planned.
- With age — the skin becomes thinner and crepey even without weight change.
- Fat that resists exercise — a fuller arm with good skin, where the issue is volume rather than looseness.
- Lipedema of the arms — disproportionate, often tender fat that behaves differently from ordinary fat; see lipedema treatment.
Liposuction, mini arm lift or full arm lift — which do I need?
| Option | Best for | Scar |
|---|---|---|
| Arm liposuction (VASER) | Mainly fat, good skin that will retract | Small entry points only |
| Liposuction + Renuvion/J-Plasma or BodyTite | Fat with mild skin laxity | Small entry points only |
| Mini (short-scar) arm lift | Loose skin limited to the upper arm near the armpit | Hidden in the armpit |
| Full arm lift (brachioplasty) | Loose skin from the armpit towards the elbow | Along the inner upper arm |
| Extended arm lift | Loose arm skin continuing down the side of the chest after major weight loss | Inner arm, across the armpit and onto the side of the chest |
The simplest test is to hold your arm out and pinch the underside. Thick, firm tissue that springs back is mostly fat; thin, soft skin that hangs even when you are slim is excess skin. Removing fat from beneath loose skin can make the looseness more obvious, which is why liposuction alone is the wrong choice for a skin problem — and why an arm lift is unnecessary for a fat problem.
Where does the scar go — and what is the honest trade-off?
There is no way to remove skin without a scar, so the real question is where the scar sits and whether the change is worth it to you.
- Mini arm lift — the scar is hidden in the armpit. Elegant, but it only treats the part of the arm closest to it.
- Full arm lift — the scar runs along the inner upper arm from the armpit towards the elbow, placed so that it is as hidden as possible when your arms are at your sides. It is visible when the arm is raised or in sleeveless clothes.
- Extended arm lift — the scar continues from the armpit down the side of the chest, so the roll of skin beneath the arm is removed in the same line.
The trade is a scar for an arm that no longer hangs. For patients with heavy, swinging skin it is usually worthwhile; for mild looseness, liposuction with skin tightening may be the better compromise. Dr. Paulo Michels marks the scar on you, with your arms down and raised, so the decision is made with your eyes open.
How is arm lift surgery performed?
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia at Elyzee Hospital and usually takes two to three hours, longer when combined with other procedures.
- Marking — with you standing and your arms raised, the skin to be removed and the scar line are drawn.
- Liposuction — VASER liposuction reduces fat in the arm, refines the contour and allows the skin to be removed with less disruption of the deeper tissue.
- Skin removal — the excess skin is removed conservatively, with attention to the depth of the dissection to protect the nerves and lymphatic channels that run along the inner arm.
- Closure — the wound is closed in layers for a fine, flat scar.
In a mini arm lift, the skin is removed through the armpit only. In an extended arm lift, the excision continues onto the side of the chest.
What are the risks of an arm lift?
Every operation carries the general risks of bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma), delayed wound healing, blood clots and anaesthesia. The risks specific to the arm are:
- Scar quality — the inner arm can form wide or raised scars, and a scar crossing the armpit can tighten; careful design and scar care reduce this.
- Numbness — small sensory nerves run along the inner arm; if affected, part of the inner arm or forearm may feel numb, usually temporarily, occasionally permanently.
- Swelling of the arm — persistent lymphatic swelling is uncommon, but it is a recognised risk because lymphatic channels pass through this area. Patients with existing arm swelling, arm lipedema or previous lymph node surgery are assessed specifically.
- Asymmetry or residual looseness that may need a small revision.
These are discussed at the consultation with your own anatomy in front of you, not in general terms.
Can an arm lift be combined with other surgery?
Often, especially after major weight loss:
- Breast surgery — a breast lift or reduction treats the side of the chest too, so an extended arm lift and a breast operation fit naturally together. After GLP-1 weight loss, see Ozempic breasts.
- The trunk — loose skin around the abdomen, flanks and back is treated with a 360 tummy tuck, a Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck or a body lift.
- The thighs — see thigh lift.
Combining is decided by safety, not convenience: total operating time, your general health and how you will move during recovery (arms and legs operated together make early mobility harder). Often the plan is staged, with the trunk first and the arms or thighs in a second operation.
Pain and recovery
Most patients describe tightness and soreness rather than sharp pain. Pain control is planned with the anaesthesiologist, including nerve blocks where appropriate, and continues with oral painkillers at home.
- Days 1–2 — hospital stay for monitoring; walking the same day; arms rested on pillows
- Week 1 — rest at home; Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) starts to reduce swelling
- Weeks 1–2 — most patients return to desk work
- Weeks 4–6 — lifting the arms above the shoulders, heavy lifting and upper-body exercise resume gradually
- Week 6 — compression sleeve or garment off
- Months 6–12+ — the scar matures and fades
Swelling of the forearm and hand is common in the first weeks; elevation and compression help. Drains are used only when needed and are usually removed within a few days. In the UAE climate, stay in air-conditioned spaces while wearing compression and keep the scars out of direct sun for the first year.
Patients from Dubai
Many of Dr. Paulo Michels’ body-contouring patients live in Dubai. All consultations and surgery take place at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi — you can book by WhatsApp or phone on +971 50 106 7981, or through the contact form. Pre-operative tests, surgery and follow-up visits are grouped where possible to keep the number of journeys down. See also plastic surgery for patients in Dubai.
What does your investment include?
Arm lift fees are quoted individually after consultation, because the plan — liposuction with skin tightening, mini, full or extended arm lift, alone or combined — determines the operating time and hospital stay. The quote is all-inclusive:
- Surgeon’s fee and pre-operative planning
- Specialist anaesthesiologist
- Hospital stay and operating theatre at Elyzee Hospital
- Post-operative compression garments
- Discharge medication
- Follow-up appointments and ongoing clinical support
Questions, answered
Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) in Abu Dhabi — your questions
What is an arm lift (brachioplasty)?+
An arm lift, medically called brachioplasty, is an operation that removes loose skin and excess fat from the upper arm and tightens what remains, so the underside of the arm no longer hangs when you lift it. It is a skin-removal operation: it leaves a scar, and in exchange it treats looseness that exercise, diet and liposuction cannot correct.
What are bingo wings, and can surgery fix them?+
Bingo wings is the everyday name for the soft, hanging tissue under the upper arm that swings when the arm is raised or waved. It can be made mostly of fat, mostly of loose skin, or both. When it is mainly fat with good skin, arm liposuction can fix it without a long scar; when the skin itself has stretched, only an arm lift removes it.
How do I know if I need liposuction or an arm lift?+
Hold your arm out to the side and pinch the underside. If the tissue is thick and firm and the skin springs back, it is mostly fat and liposuction may be enough. If it is thin, soft and crepey and hangs even when you are slim, the problem is skin — and removing fat underneath would leave more loose skin, not less. The examination at the consultation confirms which applies.
Can arm liposuction with skin tightening avoid an arm lift?+
In mild cases, yes. VASER arm liposuction combined with internal skin tightening — Renuvion (J-Plasma) or BodyTite — can improve tone through small entry points when the skin is only mildly loose. These technologies help skin contract; they do not remove a hanging fold. When there is a true excess of skin, an arm lift gives a result that energy devices cannot.
What is a mini arm lift?+
A mini arm lift, or short-scar brachioplasty, removes a crescent of skin through an incision hidden in the armpit. It suits patients whose looseness is limited to the upper third of the arm, close to the armpit, with reasonable skin elsewhere. It is often combined with liposuction of the arm. If the laxity runs towards the elbow, a mini arm lift cannot reach it.
Where is the arm lift scar?+
In a mini arm lift, the scar is hidden in the armpit. In a full arm lift, it runs along the inner side of the upper arm, from the armpit towards the elbow, planned so that it is as hidden as possible when your arms are at your sides. In an extended arm lift after major weight loss, it continues from the armpit down the side of the chest. Dr. Paulo Michels marks the exact line on you before surgery.
Is the arm lift scar worth it?+
That is a personal decision and it should be made before surgery, not after. The scar of a full arm lift is long and visible when the arms are raised or in sleeveless clothes; in exchange, the arm no longer hangs. Patients troubled by heavy, swinging skin usually find the trade worthwhile; patients with mild looseness may prefer liposuction and skin tightening and accept a more modest change.
What is an extended arm lift?+
After major weight loss, loose skin often does not stop at the armpit — it continues down the side of the chest as a roll beneath the arm. An extended arm lift carries the excision from the arm across the armpit and onto the chest wall so both are treated in one continuous line. It is frequently combined with a breast lift, which shares the same area.
Who is a good candidate for an arm lift?+
A good candidate has loose skin of the upper arm that bothers them, a weight that has been stable for several months, good general health and realistic expectations about the scar. Non-smoking around the time of surgery is essential for healing. Typical candidates are people after major weight loss — including weight loss with Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, or after bariatric surgery — and people whose arm skin has loosened with age.
Can I have an arm lift after Ozempic or Mounjaro weight loss?+
Yes, once your weight has been stable for several months. GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are usually paused about two weeks before surgery, as directed by the anaesthesia team, because they slow stomach emptying. Never stop or change the medicine on your own; you will be given clear instructions in coordination with the doctor who prescribes it.
How is an arm lift performed?+
The operation is done under general anaesthesia at Elyzee Hospital. With your arms raised, the skin to be removed and the scar line are marked. Liposuction is usually performed first to reduce fat and allow the skin to be removed safely; the excess skin is then removed and the wound is closed in layers. The operation typically takes two to three hours depending on the extent and any combined procedures.
How painful is arm lift surgery?+
Most patients describe tightness and soreness rather than severe pain. Pain control is planned with the anaesthesiologist, including nerve blocks where appropriate, and continues with oral painkillers at home. Discomfort is greatest in the first few days and when lifting the arms.
How long is recovery after an arm lift?+
Most patients return to desk work in about one to two weeks. A compression sleeve or garment is worn for about six weeks, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps reduce swelling. Lifting the arms above the shoulders, heavy lifting and upper-body exercise wait around four to six weeks. The scar keeps maturing and fading for 12 months or more.
Will my hands and forearms swell after an arm lift?+
Some swelling of the forearm and hand is common in the first weeks, because fluid drains down the arm with gravity. Keeping the arms elevated on pillows when resting, wearing compression as instructed and Manual Lymphatic Drainage all help it settle.
What are the risks of an arm lift?+
Besides the general risks of surgery — bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed healing, blood clots and anaesthetic risk — the specific risks are a wide or raised scar, scar contraction across the armpit, asymmetry, and numbness of the inner arm or forearm if small skin nerves are affected, which is usually temporary but can occasionally persist. Prolonged swelling of the arm is uncommon, but because lymphatic channels run in this area it is a recognised risk and is discussed openly.
Can an arm lift cause lymphoedema?+
Persistent lymphatic swelling after an arm lift is uncommon, but it is a recognised risk because the lymphatic channels of the arm pass close to the area being treated. Careful planning of the depth and position of the excision is used to protect them. Patients who already have arm swelling, lipedema of the arms or a history of lymph node surgery need a specific assessment before any arm surgery.
Can an arm lift be combined with other surgery?+
Yes. It is often combined with a breast lift or breast reduction, which share the side of the chest, or performed as part of a staged plan with a 360 tummy tuck or body lift after major weight loss. What is combined depends on your health and on the total operating time considered safe; sometimes staging operations is the safer choice.
Do men have arm lifts?+
Yes. Men who have lost a lot of weight often have loose upper-arm skin and a roll of skin at the side of the chest. The operation is the same; the scar is planned along the inner arm, and the chest component is sometimes combined with gynecomastia surgery.
How long do arm lift results last?+
The skin removed does not come back, so the improvement is long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. The remaining skin continues to age, and a significant weight gain can stretch it again.
How much does an arm lift cost in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?+
The cost depends on whether you need liposuction with skin tightening, a mini, full or extended arm lift, and whether other procedures are combined. Fees are quoted individually after the consultation and the quote is all-inclusive: surgeon, anaesthesiologist, hospital and theatre, compression garments, discharge medication and follow-up. No fixed price list is published.
Do you perform arm lift surgery for patients from Dubai?+
Yes. Many of Dr. Paulo Michels' body-contouring patients live in Dubai. All consultations and surgery take place at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi, and pre-operative tests, surgery and follow-up visits are grouped to keep the number of journeys to a minimum.
