Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)
Medically reviewed by Dr. Paulo Michels, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon· Updated 22 October 2026

A thigh lift (thighplasty) removes loose, sagging skin and excess fat from the thighs, most often the inner thighs after major weight loss. A crescent inner thigh lift hides the scar in the groin crease; an extended inner thigh lift adds a vertical scar along the inner thigh; the outer thigh is lifted as part of a lower body lift. Dr. Paulo Michels performs thigh lift surgery at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi for patients from Dubai and across the UAE.
When the thighs bother you because the skin is loose rather than because the fat is stubborn, liposuction will not solve it — a thigh lift (thighplasty) will. Dr. Paulo Michels performs inner, extended and outer thigh lifts at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi, most often for patients after major weight loss, for patients from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and across the UAE.

Is my problem skin or fat?
This is the question that decides everything else, and it is answered by examination.
- Fat-dominant thighs feel firm when pinched, hold their shape and spring back. They often respond well to liposuction alone, because the skin retracts over the smaller volume.
- Skin-dominant thighs feel thin and soft, sometimes finely wrinkled. When you lift the inner thigh upwards with your hand, you see the shape you want. That is a skin problem, and only a thigh lift removes skin.
- Both — very common after weight loss. Fat removal and skin excision are then planned as one operation.
Removing fat from beneath loose skin can leave more visible looseness, which is why choosing the right operation matters more than its name.
Which thigh lift do I need?
| Option | Best for | Scar |
|---|---|---|
| Thigh liposuction ± Renuvion/J-Plasma or BodyTite | Mainly fat, or fat with mild skin laxity | Small entry points only |
| Crescent (groin-crease) inner thigh lift | Loose skin limited to the upper inner thigh | In the groin crease |
| Extended (vertical) inner thigh lift | Loose skin along the whole inner thigh, usually after major weight loss | Groin crease plus a vertical scar along the inner thigh |
| Outer thigh lift as part of a lower body lift | Loose skin over the outer thigh, hip and buttock | Around the waist and hip line — see 360 tummy tuck |
The outer thigh is lifted from above: when the waist and hip line are tightened in a 360 tummy tuck or body lift, the outer thigh follows upwards. That lower-body lift can also reduce what the inner thigh itself needs, which is why the order of operations is planned in advance.
Where does the thigh lift scar go?
There is no way to remove skin without a scar; the decision is where it sits.
- Crescent inner thigh lift — the scar lies in the groin crease, where the thigh meets the pubic area, and is usually hidden by underwear and most swimwear.
- Extended inner thigh lift — in addition, a vertical scar runs along the inner thigh towards the knee. It is longer and visible in shorts or swimwear; it is the honest price of a straighter inner thigh line after major weight loss.
Dr. Paulo Michels marks the scar on you, standing and sitting, and shows you where it will fall. If the scar required is more than you are willing to accept, a smaller operation — or none — is a legitimate choice, and better made before surgery than after.
How is a thigh lift performed?
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia at Elyzee Hospital and usually takes two to four hours, depending on the extent and any combined procedures.
- Marking — standing, the skin to be removed and the scar lines are drawn.
- Liposuction — VASER liposuction reduces fat and allows the skin to be removed with less disruption of the deeper tissue and lymphatic channels.
- Anchoring — in the groin-crease lift, the thigh skin is anchored to the firm deep tissue of the groin, which reduces the tendency of the scar to migrate downwards and widen.
- Skin removal — the excess is removed conservatively; in an extended lift, a vertical band of skin is also removed along the inner thigh.
- Closure — the wound is closed in layers.
Wound healing in the groin: the honest part
The groin is a moist area that moves with every step and every time you sit. That makes thigh lift incisions more demanding than most:
- Wound separation — small areas where the groin or the lower end of the vertical scar opens are among the more common issues. They usually heal with dressings, but they take time and patience.
- Scar migration — gravity and movement can pull the groin scar downwards or widen it; anchoring to the deep tissue is used to limit this. If the scar pulls down, it can distort the outer genital area, which is why skin removal is planned conservatively.
- Swelling of the lower legs — lymphatic channels pass through the groin; swelling of the legs and ankles is expected in the early weeks, and persistent swelling is an uncommon but recognised risk.
- Numbness of parts of the inner thigh, usually improving over months.
Alongside these come the general risks of any operation: bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma), blood clots and anaesthesia. Not smoking, good nutrition and careful hygiene are part of the preparation, not optional extras.
Can a thigh lift be combined with other surgery?
After major weight loss the thighs are rarely the only concern. Common combinations and sequences:
- The trunk — 360 tummy tuck, Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck or body lift, which also lift the outer thighs and buttocks.
- The arms — arm lift (brachioplasty).
- The buttocks — see sagging buttocks after weight loss.
Combining is decided by safety, not convenience: operating time, your general health and how you will move in recovery. Operating on the arms and thighs at the same time makes early walking and getting up harder, so staged plans are common. The overview is on loose skin after weight loss.
Pain and recovery
Most patients describe tightness rather than sharp pain, especially when sitting and walking. Pain control is planned with the anaesthesiologist, including nerve blocks where appropriate.
- Days 1–2 — hospital stay for monitoring; short walks the same day to protect circulation
- Week 1 — rest at home with legs elevated; Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) starts to reduce swelling
- Weeks 2–3 — most patients return to work
- Week 6 — compression garment off
- Weeks 6–8 — exercise resumes gradually
- Months 6–12+ — the scars mature and the final contour settles
Sitting: you can sit from the start, but low chairs, crossing the legs and long car journeys stretch the groin incision; higher chairs and short sitting periods are easier for the first weeks. Walking: short, frequent walks begin early; what waits is stretching, impact and loading. In the UAE summer, plan for compression in the heat — breathable layers and air-conditioned spaces — and keep the scars out of direct sun for the first year.
Patients from Dubai
Many of Dr. Paulo Michels’ body-contouring patients live in Dubai. All consultations and surgery take place at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi — you can book by WhatsApp or phone on +971 50 106 7981, or through the contact form. Pre-operative tests, surgery and follow-up visits are grouped where possible to keep the number of journeys down. See also plastic surgery for patients in Dubai.
What does your investment include?
Thigh lift fees are quoted individually after consultation, because the plan — liposuction with skin tightening, crescent or extended thigh lift, alone or with a body lift — determines the operating time and hospital stay. The quote is all-inclusive:
- Surgeon’s fee and pre-operative planning
- Specialist anaesthesiologist
- Hospital stay and operating theatre at Elyzee Hospital
- Post-operative compression garments
- Discharge medication
- Follow-up appointments and ongoing clinical support
Questions, answered
Thigh Lift (Thighplasty) in Abu Dhabi — your questions
What is a thigh lift?+
A thigh lift, also called thighplasty or cruroplasty, is an operation that removes loose skin and excess fat from the thighs and tightens what remains. It treats skin that has lost its elasticity — something liposuction, exercise and diet cannot correct. Most thigh lifts treat the inner thigh; the outer thigh is usually lifted as part of a lower body lift.
How do I know if I need a thigh lift or liposuction?+
Pinch the tissue of your inner thigh. If it is thick and firm and springs back, it is mostly fat and liposuction may be enough. If it is thin, soft and crepey, and lifting it upwards with your hand produces the shape you want, the problem is skin — and only a thigh lift removes skin. Many patients after weight loss have both, and the two are planned together.
What is an inner thigh lift?+
An inner (medial) thigh lift removes loose skin from the inside of the thigh. In the crescent or groin-crease version, a band of skin is removed through an incision in the fold where the thigh meets the groin, lifting the upper inner thigh. It suits patients whose looseness is concentrated in the upper third of the inner thigh.
What is an extended or vertical thigh lift?+
When loose skin runs along the whole inner thigh towards the knee — usually after major weight loss — the groin incision alone cannot reach it. An extended inner thigh lift adds a vertical incision along the inner thigh, removing skin across the width of the thigh rather than only lifting it. The scar is longer and more visible, and in exchange the inner thigh line becomes genuinely straighter.
How is the outer thigh lifted?+
Loose skin on the outside of the thigh, over the hip and towards the buttock, is lifted from above, through the waist and hip line, as part of a lower body lift — a 360 tummy tuck or body lift. The outer thigh follows the lift upwards. An isolated incision on the outer thigh is rarely the right choice.
Where is the thigh lift scar?+
In a crescent inner thigh lift, the scar sits in the groin crease and is usually hidden by underwear and most swimwear. In an extended thigh lift, there is also a vertical scar along the inner thigh, towards or to the knee, visible in shorts or swimwear. Dr. Paulo Michels marks the line on you, standing and sitting, before you decide.
Can skin tightening avoid a thigh lift?+
For mild looseness with good skin, VASER liposuction combined with internal skin tightening — Renuvion (J-Plasma) or BodyTite — can improve the inner thigh through small entry points. These technologies help skin contract; they do not remove a fold of hanging skin. When skin excess is significant, a thigh lift is the operation that corrects it.
Who is a good candidate for a thigh lift?+
A good candidate has loose thigh skin that bothers them, a weight that has been stable for several months, good general health, no active smoking and realistic expectations about the scar. Typical candidates are people after major weight loss — including weight loss with Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, or after bariatric surgery — and people whose thigh skin has loosened with age.
Can I have a thigh lift after Ozempic or Mounjaro?+
Yes, once your weight has been stable for several months. GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are usually paused about two weeks before surgery, as directed by the anaesthesia team, because they slow stomach emptying. Never stop or change the medicine on your own; clear instructions are given in coordination with the doctor who prescribes it.
How is a thigh lift performed?+
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia at Elyzee Hospital. With you standing, the skin to be removed and the scar lines are marked. Liposuction is usually performed first to reduce fat and allow skin removal with less disruption of the deeper tissue; the lift is then anchored to the firm deep tissue of the groin to reduce scar migration, the excess skin is removed and the wound is closed in layers.
Why is wound healing in the groin a concern?+
The groin is a moist area that moves with every step and every time you sit, so incisions there are under more tension and friction than most. Small areas of wound separation are among the more common issues after a thigh lift; they usually heal with dressings, but they take time. Careful anchoring, conservative skin removal, hygiene and limited stretching in the first weeks all reduce the risk.
What are the risks of a thigh lift?+
Besides the general risks of surgery — bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed healing, blood clots and anaesthetic risk — the specific risks include wound separation in the groin, downward migration or widening of the scar, distortion of the outer genital area if the scar pulls down, numbness of the inner thigh, and prolonged swelling of the lower legs, because lymphatic channels pass through the groin. These are discussed openly at the consultation.
How painful is a thigh lift?+
Most patients describe tightness and discomfort rather than severe pain, especially when sitting and walking. Pain control is planned with the anaesthesiologist, including nerve blocks where appropriate, and continues with oral painkillers at home.
How long is recovery after a thigh lift?+
Most patients need around two to three weeks before returning to work, and exercise is generally advised after about six to eight weeks. Walking short distances starts early to protect circulation. A compression garment is worn for about six weeks, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps the swelling settle.
When can I sit normally after a thigh lift?+
You can sit from the start, but sitting deep in low chairs, crossing your legs and long car journeys feel tight for a few weeks and stretch the groin incision. Higher chairs, short sitting periods and getting up to walk regularly are advised during the early recovery.
Will my ankles swell after a thigh lift?+
Yes, swelling of the lower legs and ankles is expected in the first weeks, because fluid travels downwards with gravity. Elevating the legs when resting, wearing compression as instructed and Manual Lymphatic Drainage help it settle.
Can a thigh lift be combined with other surgery?+
Often, especially after major weight loss. The thighs can be treated together with or after a 360 tummy tuck or body lift, which also improves the outer thigh. Arms and thighs together make early movement harder, so the plan is frequently staged; what can safely be combined depends on your health and the total operating time.
How long do thigh lift results last?+
The skin removed does not come back, so the improvement is long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. Some relaxation of the remaining skin occurs over the first months and with ageing, and significant weight gain can stretch the thighs again.
Is a thigh lift suitable for lipedema?+
Lipedema is a disease of the fat tissue and is usually treated first with lymph-sparing liposuction. In some patients, loose skin remains after the fat has been removed, and a thigh lift may be considered later as a second stage. The order and timing are decided individually.
How much does a thigh lift cost in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?+
The cost depends on whether you need liposuction with skin tightening, a crescent or extended thigh lift, and whether it is combined with a body lift or other procedures. Fees are quoted individually after the consultation and the quote is all-inclusive: surgeon, anaesthesiologist, hospital and theatre, compression garments, discharge medication and follow-up. No fixed price list is published.
Do you perform thigh lift surgery for patients from Dubai?+
Yes. Many of Dr. Paulo Michels' body-contouring patients live in Dubai. All consultations and surgery take place at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi, and pre-operative tests, surgery and follow-up visits are grouped to keep the number of journeys to a minimum.
